In order to save space in our son’s bedroom we found a captain’s bed for him.  The mattress is mounted above drawers.  It works well for him as he can not put all of his clothes in the six drawers under the bed and not have to have a separate dresser in the room.  It works well for me as I get my dresser back.   We did have to install a bed rail on the outside of the new bed.  It is about a foot higher than the old one and we have concerns for his safety if he should happen to roll off the bed.
