In addition to how the apartment looks there are a few things we always check out before we sign the lease. Where is the parking in relation to our apartment? How far do we have to walk to get to the apartment mailboxes? Is there a public area nearby that could be a source of loud noises at night? How long has the apartment manager been there and is there a high turnover rate of the residents. Knowing these things can tell you a lot about the apartment complex and help keep you from experiencing routine irritations as you live there for awhile.

Going green is the cool bandwagon to jump on these days. There are simple things you can do to make a positive impact on the environment. Recycling is made easy by most cities, they provide you with bins and a recycling truck picks up once a week. Even if your city does not offer this service, recycling dumpsters can be found in many areas. Even my small town has a paper dumpster at the library. Another green step you can take is using cloth diapers. Disposable diapers do not breakdown as they sit rotting in the landfill. You also save money taking this step.

After nearly 20 years of preparing meals for my family, I have finally found the world’s best chicken recipe. Chicken is a very useful meat; it can be spiced up or toned down, made fancy for company or quickly for family, it even freezes well for eating later. My personal favorite is a lovely roast chicken that is prepared, cooked in my crock pot, and eaten after a long cold day of skiing, skating or sledding. To prepare this simple chicken, just wash a roasting chicken (inside and out) and pat it dry with paper towels. Stuff some garlic and an onion inside the cavity and rub the outside with a mixture of butter and paprika. When it is done cooking, it will be tender, juicy and beautiful. Served with mashed potatoes and a vegetable medley, my family inhales it and asks for more - every time.

Interior designers are now, more than ever before, aware of the importance of lighting in any design. Far too long lighting has been bracketed with accessories in the overall scheme of decorating - seen as an afterthought to pretty-up a room once all the real business of designing has been completed. However, lighting is far too precious an asset to misuse in this way. Much too little thought is given to it, all the effort is put into choosing expensive fabrics, stylish furniture and paint colours. Utilised properly, lighting can double the value of those elements - interior design color, shapes, patterns and textures - that you have included in the overall design. In the past it was considered extremely daring to rely upon any fittings beyond the ceiling rose in the centre of the room. Today much greater thought it put into more subtle lighting, with lamps, dimmer switches and accent lighting.

Our home looked so wonderful as we arrived for the first time after it had been built! And I was delighted that all the outside finishing touches had been added by that time as well. Until I realized we had not chosen a mailbox for the house! Then my husband reminded me that the mail was delivered to the bank of wall mount mailboxes at the bottom of the road. I had never noticed, probably because I was always captivated by the scenery of forest of firs and other perennial trees. The mailboxes were large and sturdy and it was such a relief not to have to worry about finding one.

You can never really like New York with just reading about it. The only way to appreciate the life of a New Yorker is to be a New Yorker yourself. New York is a good place to foreigners and strangers. In fact, every year New York welcomes thousands of foreigners and strangers.Being a true New Yorker for almost half of my life, my fondest memory with the city is when I was still a naïve kid selling kids picture frame at my uncle’s specialty shop. It was the time when street-playing in the rain was considered the most joyous thing children could do. I could never forget New York because it has a special place here in my heart.

I am doing something different this year to help the kids in our family celebrate Christmas. I have arranged for each of them to get a letter from santa. It will help to keep them believing in Santa a bit longer, and they will also have it as a special memento. The letters are all going to be personalized, and the company that sends them out has a way to get them postmarked from the North Pole for that extra touch of authenticity in case the kids think to check on where the letter came from. That way it is less obvious the parents are involved.

It’s a matter of some debate amongst cookery historians about the origin of the word barbecue. Some etymologists (word historians) believe the word derives from the Caribbean. This belief is based on the fact the Taino people from this region have a word “barbacoa” - the literal translation of which is “sacred fire pit”. Over the years, it appears both the word and the method of cooking was adopted by the Spanish, the French, and then the English. Whilst it is also spelt as “barbeque” or shortened to “bbq” - especially in the United States - the first recorded use of the word barbecue in the English language was in 1697 (according to the Oxford English Dictionary).
